2017-2018 Spring

It's now 2018 and welcome to the course MATH 1014 or MATH 2741.  In a new semester, please make sure that you get back everything from the pre-requisite(s), better in the first two weeks; or otherwise it would unfortunately be another tough semester.  Ready or not, time still flies~

For both courses, Kitty is trying something new according to SFQs (those reasonable ones) as well as feedbacks (maybe given face-to-face) from her previous students.  Here are the lists of measures she is going to take:

In MATH 1014, Kitty is voice taping herself during class so that students can listen to how the examples were done when they do revisions.  However as this may involve some background sounds such as students' voice, therefore she would only post it starting from Week 3 if there is no objection raised by her students.

In MATH 2741, Kitty is setting up a mini-library with a collection of basic geometry books/references.  Hopefully the secondary school texts (up till AL Pure Maths) would help you with the first few weeks while some IMO related readings could get you through the latter part(s) of the course.  Although you may find extra examples and exercises from them, trial-and-error is the most important spirit/idea in finishing all pieces of work in this course.

All in all, aids are just something assisting those who study.  They help you to get onto the right track(s) and hence prevent you from wasting too much effort, but are nothing if you choose not exercising yourself(es).

MATH 1012

MATH 2011

For L1 and L2, we will be focusing on Zeta's notes, with my notes for the 3rd lecture as a supplementary.

For L3, the tutorial in this year is very similar to last year, so we will be using my notes in 2016-2017, with my tutorial notes in 2015-2016 as a supplementary.

Since no further amendments were done on the past notes, please be reminded that there may be some typos and errors in the past notes.  Those spotted out already would be announced in class.

The tutorial in this year follows its tradition since 2015, so we will be using the same sets of notes as in 2015-2016 and 2016-2017, with previous notes in 2014-2015 as a supplementary.

Since no further amendments were done on the past notes, please be reminded that there may be some typos and errors in the past notes.  Those spotted out already would be announced in class.

Week 1:

In the first tutorial, we are going to have an introduction to our tutorial and the MSC, together with some basic pre-requisites for this course.  Please come if you cannot finish a DSE level Math (core part) paper on your own.          20170831

Solutions done in class:  T3A  T3B  T1C  T2D*  T2A

(*For T2D, there is an amendment after class, on the trigonometric question we did at the end of class.)

Week 2:

All classes will be synchronized to "functions", so T3A and T3B will be on pages 3 (right side ONLY) to 7 on my notes in 2016-2017 while T1C, T2D and T2A will be on pages 12 to 20 on Zeta's notes.          20170908

Solutions:  T3A (1, 2, 3)  T3B (1, 2, 3)  T1C  T2D  T2A*

(*For T2A, please go to Zeta's video for more details.)

Week 3:

In the coming tutorial, I will continue with pages 5 to 7 of my notes, which was distributed last Monday (so you need NOT to print anything).  Also it seems that the contents on today's flipped class are a bit difficult to you, so let's spare some time for that (instead of having another topic).          20170915

Solution:  T3A  T3B (1, 2, 3T1C  T2D  T2A

Week 4:

We are doing limits and Kitty will prepare the notes.

Solution:  T3A  T3B  T1C  T2D  T2A

Kitty was sick and made some mistakes on Monday, and here are some corrections to what she wrote.

Week 5 (with Monday and Thursday as public holiday)

Solution:  T1C (whiteboardextraT  T2D

Week 6: Differentiation is started.

Solution:  T3A  T3B  T1C  T2D  T2A

Week 2 / Tutorial 1:

In the first tutorial, we are going to have an introduction to Quadratic Surfaces.  Please come with well-revision done before.  We will start with conic sections; followed by ellipsoid, elliptic paraboloid, hyperbolic paraboloid, cone, hyperboloid of one (or two) sheet(s), which are all in three-dimensions instead of just two.          20170901

Conclusion in one line:

You need to know the resulting curve of intersecting of different surface in/for the exam.

Solutions:  T3D  T3C  T3A  T2B

Week 3 (Tutorial 2) solutions:  T3D  T3C  T3A  T2B
